What Does It Actually Mean to “Stand Out” on Social Media?

It’s one of the most common briefs we get: “we want our social media to stand out.” Fair enough, but standing out means different things to different businesses, and it pays to get clear on which one you’re actually chasing.

Two very different kinds of “standing out”

There’s standing out as a trendsetter, the business riding every audio trend, every viral format, every meme-of-the-week. And then there’s standing out as an expert in your field, the business people trust because they clearly know what they’re talking about.

For most businesses we work with, it’s the second one that actually moves the needle.

So how do you stand out as an expert?

1. Share real client success, in real numbers

Take one of the least “exciting” industries you can think of: tax accounting. Even there, the story is simple: this client came to us and saved a specific amount, or got a specific amount back at tax time. Concrete numbers and outcomes are inherently more interesting than a general statement about “great service.”

2. Stay topical, in your industry, not on TikTok

You don’t need to chase social trends to stay relevant. Recent government changes, new incentives, new regulations, new tools in your industry- these are things your ideal clients are already searching for. Being the business that explains what a change means for them is a far more sustainable way to show up than trying to time a viral sound.

3. Speak with authority on your own turf

If you’re the expert, act like it. Lean into your actual experience, your client outcomes, and the specific knowledge you’ve built up over years in the industry. That authority is something a trend-chaser can’t fake or shortcut.

Why chasing trends is the harder path

Jumping on trends looks tempting because it feels fast. But it puts you in direct competition with everyone else jumping on the same trend, at the same time, for the same fifteen minutes of attention. You need luck to catch a trend early, and even more luck to convert that attention into something that actually builds your brand. Meanwhile, the businesses quietly sharing genuine expertise are building an audience that compounds over time.

The takeaway

Before your next round of content, ask: are we trying to look trendy, or are we trying to look like the obvious choice in our field? For almost every business we work with, the second goal is the one worth investing in.
