How Long Should a Corporate Video Be?

There’s no single right answer, but there is a wrong one: making every video the same length regardless of what it’s for.

It’s one of the most common questions we hear from Australian businesses, and understandably so. Too short, and you risk leaving out the message you actually needed to land. Too long, and you lose your audience before you get there. The real answer depends on what the video needs to do, where people will watch it, and how much attention your audience is willing to give you at that moment.

Here’s a practical guide to getting the length right, video by video.

The Golden Rule: Length Should Match Purpose

Before deciding how long a video should be, define what it needs to achieve. A video designed to stop the scroll on Instagram has a completely different job to a training video an employee is required to watch. Match the length to the goal, not the other way around.

Social Media Content: 6–60 Seconds

Attention on social platforms is short, and the competition for it is fierce. For LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook feeds:

  • 6–30 seconds works best for pure awareness content and paid ads
  • 30–60 seconds gives you room for a short story, product highlight, or behind-the-scenes moment

If you haven’t made your point in the first three seconds, most viewers will have scrolled past.

Explainer Videos: 60–90 Seconds

Explainer videos need to educate quickly without overstaying their welcome. The sweet spot is generally under 90 seconds, enough time to outline a problem, present your solution, and close with a clear next step, without losing viewers who are still deciding whether to keep watching.

Brand and Company Overview Videos: 2–3 Minutes

Videos designed to sit on your homepage or “About Us” page can afford a little more room, but shouldn’t outstay two to three minutes. This is enough time to introduce your story, your team, and your point of difference, while still respecting that most website visitors are browsing, not settling in.

Testimonial Videos: 1–2 Minutes

Client success stories work best when they’re tight and focused. A structure covering the challenge, the decision, and the result rarely needs more than two minutes, and shorter, punchier testimonials often perform better when repurposed as social clips.

Training and Internal Communication Videos: 5–10 Minutes

This is the exception to “shorter is better.” When an audience must watch onboarding content, compliance training, or internal updates, longer runtimes are acceptable because the goal is thoroughness, not attention-grabbing. Even here, though, it’s worth breaking longer content into shorter modules where possible, since retention drops significantly past the ten-minute mark.

Event Recap Videos: 3–5 Minutes

Event highlight videos need enough time to convey scale and energy, but should stay tightly edited. Three to five minutes is usually enough to hit the key moments, keynotes, crowd reactions, and awards, without the recap feeling like a watered-down replay of the whole day.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Set a Length

  • Where will people watch it? A captive boardroom audience will sit through more than a scrolling social feed.
  • Is the audience choosing to watch, or required to? Required viewing can run longer; opt-in content needs to earn every second.
  • What’s the single message they need to leave with? If you can’t summarise it in one sentence, the video is probably trying to do too much.

Let the Goal Set the Length

The best-performing corporate videos are rarely the longest ones; they’re the ones edited with a clear sense of who’s watching and why. At Compass Video, we help Brisbane businesses work out not just what story to tell, but how long it should take to tell it, so every video does its job without wasting a second of your audience’s attention.
